Why Kids and Nature Should be a Daily Non-negotiable

All thing Motherhood & Baby

When people ask me what our daily non-negotiables are, getting outside in nature is always at the top of my list. Every single day, no matter how busy life gets, and no matter the weather (with very few exceptions), I make sure my son and I spend time outdoors — real, hands-in-the-dirt, breathe-in-the-fresh-air kind of time. And honestly? It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for both of us.

Nature has this incredible ability to ground children. It’s not just about getting a little sunlight (hello, Vitamin D!), but also about supporting every part of a child’s growth. Studies show that regular time outdoors can boost a child’s immune function, enhance cognitive development, lower stress hormones, and improve overall mood. Fresh air helps strengthen lungs and increase oxygen flow to the brain, which aids in concentration and emotional regulation. Essentially, just a short burst of outdoor time can make a big difference in how children grow and learn.

When we’re outside, I let my son just be himself. I don’t micromanage his play — I follow his lead. Some days he’s busy collecting rocks, tucking each one into his pocket like they’re tiny treasures. Other days, he’s jumping in muddy puddles with a giant smile on his face or picking dandelions to gift me as if they were the most beautiful blooms in the world. Sometimes, we lose all track of time and end up spending hours exploring. There’s no rigid plan or agenda — just a happy embrace of discovery and free exploration.

It’s during these moments that I see him truly thrive. His imagination comes alive, his spirit feels unburdened, and a deep sense of peace fills our hearts. He isn’t distracted by screens or overwhelmed by noise; he’s immersed in the natural world around him. And honestly, I am too.

Making outdoor time a daily non-negotiable hasn’t just made a positive impact on my son — it’s transformed me as well. I’ve learned the importance of slowing down, taking a deep breath, and reconnecting with nature’s simple wonders. Muddy boots, grass-stained pants, and pockets brimming with rocks are all little badges of a day well spent.

The Benefits of Fresh Air and Nature for Kids:

  • Boosts Immune Health: Regular outdoor play improves lung function and strengthens the body’s natural defenses.
  • Enhances Cognitive Development: Exposure to natural settings can sharpen focus and foster creativity.
  • Reduces Stress: Even a short burst of time outdoors can lower stress hormones and help reset the nervous system.
  • Promotes Physical Health: Running, jumping, and climbing support healthy muscle development and coordination.
  • Improves Mood and Social Skills: Unstructured play in nature encourages positive social interactions and nurtures a joyful spirit.

I truly believe every child deserves that kind of freedom, and every mama deserves those simple, soul-filling moments. What are your favorite ways to connect with nature? Let me know in the comments below!

I am a first time boy mom, wife, self-published author and wellness connoisseur, trying to live a holistic lifestyle in the very small town of Moonstone, Ontario. I started this blog to share my passion (obsession) for natural, non-toxic living. Throughout this blog you will find inspiration to live your healthiest life, tips to switch to a natural, toxic-free lifestyle, honest and transparent motherhood, birth, breastfeeding, essential oils, help with getting started with Baby Led weaning and all other things “crunchy”. From teaching yoga, to making my own products and sourdough, to trying out veganism, buying an absurd amount of crystals, and trying many alternative medicines, I have dipped my toe in many aspects of the wellness world. I have also completed many courses in Herbalism, meditation, different types of yoga and Ayurveda.

Currently, I am studying to receive my Holistic Nutritionist (specializing in children’s nutrition) diploma. After giving birth to my son, I realized just how important living a natural, healthy lifestyle was. Feeding my son healthy, homemade organic foods is one of my favourite things to do. We began baby led weaning when he was six months old and our food journey has been nothing short of wonderful. This kid will eat practically everything I offer him (except broccoli). My goal is to share our journey and offer some support to new mamas and to assist with making their babies transition to food go smoothly. I also want to help mamas take care of themselves by supporting them with holistic nutrition consulting and meal planning. Mama’s health is just as important as babies, we must set a good example for our children by being the absolute best version of ourselves, they are always watching!

I look forward to meeting you and helping you start your holistic journey.

Hey, I'm Jamie, The founder behind Moonstone Mommy!
