Why I Don’t Use Conventional Sunscreen (And What I Use Instead)

Non-Toxic Living

In our toxin-loaded world, one of the most overlooked everyday products that carries a surprising amount of health risk is sunscreen. As a holistic wellness coach and mama committed to clean, whole-body living, I’ve chosen to ditch conventional sunscreens and instead opt for a zinc-based tallow balm—a nourishing, skin-loving, and truly non-toxic alternative.

Here’s why.

 What’s Really in Conventional Sunscreen?

Most store-bought sunscreens—yes, even the “gentle” ones marketed to kids—contain chemical UV filters and other synthetic ingredients that come with a long list of red flags.

Common Toxic Ingredients to Watch Out For:

Oxybenzone: A known endocrine disruptor linked to hormone imbalances, early puberty, and low sperm count. It’s also been detected in breast milk.

Octinoxate: Alters thyroid and reproductive hormone function and has been shown to damage DNA in human cells.

Homosalate: Breaks down into toxic byproducts and can disrupt estrogen, androgen, and progesterone.

Octocrylene: Can become contaminated with benzophenone, a potential carcinogen, and contributes to oxidative stress in the body.

Avobenzone: Photounstable, meaning it breaks down in the sun and must be stabilized with additional chemicals (often toxic).

Parabens & Synthetic Fragrance: These are often added to improve shelf life or scent, but they’re tied to allergies, endocrine disruption, and even possible links to breast cancer.

Environmental Impact

The damage goes beyond our bodies. These chemical sunscreens are a major threat to marine life, especially coral reefs.

Oxybenzone and octinoxate are toxic to coral, even in tiny amounts. They contribute to coral bleaching and affect the DNA of coral larvae, making it harder for reefs to regenerate.

• These ingredients have been banned in Hawaii, Key West, and Palau because of their proven environmental harm.

• They also accumulate in our waterways, disrupting aquatic ecosystems and harming fish reproduction.

Protecting ourselves shouldn’t mean poisoning our planet.

What I Use Instead: Zinc-Based Tallow

Instead of slathering my skin—or my child’s skin—with chemical-laden sunscreens, I use a zinc-based tallow balm. It’s rich, nourishing, and totally safe.

Why Tallow?

• Made from grass-fed beef fat, tallow is incredibly similar in composition to our skin’s own natural oils.

• It’s full of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, which support skin health, barrier repair, and deep hydration.

• Tallow is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores, and it’s especially healing for eczema, dry skin, and sunburns.

Why Zinc?

Non-nano zinc oxide is a mineral sunscreen that sits on top of the skin and physically blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

• Unlike chemical sunscreens, it doesn’t absorb into the bloodstream.

• It’s reef-safe, stable in sunlight, and provides immediate protection without needing to “set” like conventional sunscreen.

This combination of zinc and tallow creates a creamy, protective balm that nourishes while it shields. It’s the only thing I trust on my son’s sensitive skin.

The Benefits of Switching:

• No hormone disruptors

• No synthetic fragrances or parabens

• Safe for babies, pregnancy, and nursing mamas

• Nourishes skin instead of irritating it

• Environmentally safe and biodegradable

• Supports your body’s natural sun response instead of blocking it entirely

A Final Word on the Sun

I want to be clear: The sun is not our enemy.

We were designed to thrive with sun exposure. It boosts our vitamin D levels, regulates our circadian rhythm, improves mood, and even supports hormone production.

The real danger is burning—not the sun itself. That’s why I believe in:

• Morning sun for vitamin D

• Midday shade or zinc-tallow protection

• Covering up with a wide-brimmed hat and light clothing when needed

• Supporting the skin from the inside out with antioxidant-rich foods like berries, greens, and healthy fats

Looking for a Clean Sunscreen Alternative?

If you’re ready to ditch the toxins, look for a small-batch zinc tallow balm such as The Tallowed Truth : S-Balm.

Your skin is your largest organ. Protect it wisely. Nourish it deeply. And never fear the sun—just meet it with love and intention.

I am a first time boy mom, wife, self-published author and wellness connoisseur, trying to live a holistic lifestyle in the very small town of Moonstone, Ontario. I started this blog to share my passion (obsession) for natural, non-toxic living. Throughout this blog you will find inspiration to live your healthiest life, tips to switch to a natural, toxic-free lifestyle, honest and transparent motherhood, birth, breastfeeding, essential oils, help with getting started with Baby Led weaning and all other things “crunchy”. From teaching yoga, to making my own products and sourdough, to trying out veganism, buying an absurd amount of crystals, and trying many alternative medicines, I have dipped my toe in many aspects of the wellness world. I have also completed many courses in Herbalism, meditation, different types of yoga and Ayurveda.

Currently, I am studying to receive my Holistic Nutritionist (specializing in children’s nutrition) diploma. After giving birth to my son, I realized just how important living a natural, healthy lifestyle was. Feeding my son healthy, homemade organic foods is one of my favourite things to do. We began baby led weaning when he was six months old and our food journey has been nothing short of wonderful. This kid will eat practically everything I offer him (except broccoli). My goal is to share our journey and offer some support to new mamas and to assist with making their babies transition to food go smoothly. I also want to help mamas take care of themselves by supporting them with holistic nutrition consulting and meal planning. Mama’s health is just as important as babies, we must set a good example for our children by being the absolute best version of ourselves, they are always watching!

I look forward to meeting you and helping you start your holistic journey.
