Simple, Holistic Things That I Do To Support My Toddler’s Body When He Is Getting Sick.

All thing Motherhood & Baby

This winter was a rough one! It seems like every time we went to a play place or social event with other children, we ended up sick. Sound familiar? The sniffles, the clinginess, that little sparkle in their eye that says “I don’t feel good, Mama.” It used to stress me out—until I learned how to support my toddler’s body naturally and gently, right from the very first signs.

The beautiful part? He’s typically only sick for a day or two. It’s rare for anything to linger longer than that. I truly believe that supporting the body’s natural defenses before something takes hold makes all the difference.

Here’s exactly what I do when I notice something coming on:

Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry is a powerful antiviral and immune booster. It’s rich in flavonoids and antioxidants that help fight off viruses and reduce inflammation. I give him a spoonful (or mix it into juice if he’s being fussy!) as soon as I notice those first signs. It’s a go-to in our house all winter long.

Detox Bath

I give my little guy a warm detox bath which helps draw out toxins through the skin, calm the nervous system, and support lymphatic drainage. I use baking soda, bentonite clay and a couple drops of lavender or eucalyptus essential oil. Baking soda alkalizes the body and soothes irritation, while bentonite clay binds to impurities and supports detoxification. It also helps him relax (which is healing in itself).

Green Juice

Green juice has always been a part of our morning routine but it is especially important when an illness is coming. A fresh green juice packed with spinach, cucumber, lemon, and a touch of apple gives his body a hit of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that strengthen the immune system and fight off oxidative stress. It’s like liquid sunshine in a glass!

Time Outside in the Sunshine

Even if we’re just cuddling under a blanket on our front porch, fresh air and natural light help regulate his circadian rhythm and boost vitamin D levels, which is essential for immune function. Nature itself is a healer—sometimes a few deep breaths outside makes all the difference.

Coconut Water

Cold pressed, organic coconut water is my go to for all illness. Hydration is key when the body is fighting something, and pure coconut water is loaded with electrolytes, potassium, and natural sugars to keep energy up and cells nourished. It’s gentle on the tummy, and he actually loves it—so it’s an easy win.

Orange-Coloured Foods

I fill my sons plate with nature’s orange medicine—carrots, sweet potatoes, oranges, cantaloupe, etc. These are all rich in beta-carotene (which converts to vitamin A) and vitamin C—both essential for immune strength and mucous membrane health.

Humidifier with “Easy Air” Essential Oil

I run a cool mist humidifier in his room with a couple drops of DoTerra’s “Easy Air”. It helps open up his airways, ease congestion, and keep mucous membranes hydrated—especially helpful at night. See the shopping link below to get your own!

Deep Breaths & Lots of Cuddles

Never underestimate the healing power of calm energy and connection. We slow down, take deep breaths together, and snuggle as much as possible. Oxytocin (the “love hormone”) actually supports immune function and reduces stress hormones. And nothing soothes a sick little one like mama’s arms.

Grass-Fed Butter

Yes—grass-fed butter! It’s rich in fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, and K2, which are crucial for immune health. I’ll let him eat it straight from the spoon or melt it into warm foods for a little extra nourishment and comfort.

Fresh Air In Bedroom

Even if it’s cold out, I crack his window open for a little while to let in fresh air and circulate out any stale indoor air. Clean air helps reduce the viral load in a space and gives the lungs something fresh to breathe.

Bone Broth (Mixed Into Comfort Foods)

Bone broth is loaded with collagen, amino acids, and minerals that help heal the gut and support immune function. I sneak it into his favorite homemade (organic!) meals—soups, mac and cheese, scrambled eggs, etc. It’s nourishing, grounding, and incredibly healing.

Red Light Therapy

I use a red light therapy wand on low for a few minutes to support his body’s natural healing process. Red and near-infrared light help reduce inflammation, boost mitochondrial function, and support cellular repair. It’s gentle, soothing, and a powerful tool when used consistently. I’ll often shine it near his chest or back while he’s resting or cuddling.

Raw Local Honey

A spoonful of raw local honey soothes a scratchy throat, calms a cough, and offers natural antibacterial and antiviral benefits. It also contains trace amounts of local pollen, which may help with seasonal immune tolerance. I’ll hand him a spoonful and his little eyes light up while he enjoys his medicinal treat.

At the end of the day, I remind myself that sickness isn’t always the enemy—it’s often just the body doing what it’s designed to do. With a little love, nature’s remedies, and some time to rest and repair, our kiddos can bounce back stronger than ever.

I am a first time boy mom, wife, self-published author and wellness connoisseur, trying to live a holistic lifestyle in the very small town of Moonstone, Ontario. I started this blog to share my passion (obsession) for natural, non-toxic living. Throughout this blog you will find inspiration to live your healthiest life, tips to switch to a natural, toxic-free lifestyle, honest and transparent motherhood, birth, breastfeeding, essential oils, help with getting started with Baby Led weaning and all other things “crunchy”. From teaching yoga, to making my own products and sourdough, to trying out veganism, buying an absurd amount of crystals, and trying many alternative medicines, I have dipped my toe in many aspects of the wellness world. I have also completed many courses in Herbalism, meditation, different types of yoga and Ayurveda.

Currently, I am studying to receive my Holistic Nutritionist (specializing in children’s nutrition) diploma. After giving birth to my son, I realized just how important living a natural, healthy lifestyle was. Feeding my son healthy, homemade organic foods is one of my favourite things to do. We began baby led weaning when he was six months old and our food journey has been nothing short of wonderful. This kid will eat practically everything I offer him (except broccoli). My goal is to share our journey and offer some support to new mamas and to assist with making their babies transition to food go smoothly. I also want to help mamas take care of themselves by supporting them with holistic nutrition consulting and meal planning. Mama’s health is just as important as babies, we must set a good example for our children by being the absolute best version of ourselves, they are always watching!

I look forward to meeting you and helping you start your holistic journey.
