15 Cheap (and fun!) Things to Do with Your Toddler this Summer

All thing Motherhood & Baby

Summer is the most exciting time of year for most kids, there’s just something about being outside all day. Kids are happy simply running barefoot in the grass, so summer doesn’t always have to mean expensive outings, pricey attractions, or overstimulating amusement parks. Some of the most memorable moments with your toddler are the simplest ones — finding rocks, digging in the sand, or giggling over a picnic lunch in the shade.

If you’re craving connection, sunshine, and sweet (affordable!) memories with your little one, here are some joy-filled ideas that won’t break the bank — and in many cases, won’t cost you a dime.

1. Nature Art

Head outside and collect leaves, flowers, pinecones, or even feathers. Then grab some washable paints and let your toddler stamp, roll, and swirl their way to a beautiful nature-inspired masterpiece. Bonus points for using recycled paper or cardboard as your canvas! It makes for hours of cheap fun!

2. Go for a Nature Hike

No need to conquer a mountain. A walk through your neighborhood trails, a local forest, or a quiet dirt path is enough to spark curiosity. Let your toddler collect sticks, spot mushrooms, or point out squirrels. Every step is a new adventure through their eyes.

3. Collect Rocks

Toddlers love rocks — the colours, the textures, the clunking sound when they drop them into a bucket. Make a game out of finding the smoothest, shiniest, or silliest-shaped rocks. You can even bring them home to paint later!

4. Visit Local Parks (and Try a New One Each Week!)

Your local parks are goldmines for toddler fun. Swings, slides, open space to run, and usually a few other little friends to meet. Try rotating parks weekly — new scenery makes the same routine feel brand new.

5. Cool Down at the Splash Pad

Many communities have free splash pads that are perfect for hot days. Let your toddler run wild through the sprinklers while you soak up the sun.

6. Explore a Nature Preserve or Conservation Area

These hidden gems are often free or by donation and offer boardwalks, trails, and wildlife spotting. Keep an eye out for frogs, butterflies, or dragonflies near the water!

7. Bird Watching with Binoculars

Pick up a pair of toy binoculars (or make your own from cardboard rolls!) and let your toddler “spy” on the birds. Visit a quiet area or your backyard and point out different bird colours and sounds. It’s a calm, mindful activity — and you’ll probably enjoy it too.

8. Beach Days

Many public beaches are either free or low-cost, and toddlers can spend hours digging in the sand, collecting shells, and splashing in the water. Pack your own snacks, sunscreen, and shade — and you’re set for the whole day.

9. Pack a Picnic

Whether you’re hitting the beach, a park, or your own backyard, packing lunch instead of grabbing takeout not only saves money but guarantees your child will actually eat something they like. Plus, there’s something so nostalgic about a summer lunch outdoors, blanket and all.

10. Backyard Water Play

Can’t get to a splash pad? A $10 kiddie pool, a hose, or even a few buckets and cups can lead to a full afternoon of soaking wet joy. Add bubbles, flower petals or even some epsom salts to the water for extra fun.

11. Library Story Time

Many local libraries host free toddler story times or crafts throughout the summer. It’s air-conditioned, educational, and gives you a chance to make friends with other like-minded parents.

12. Go on a Bug Hunt

Turn over rocks, peek under leaves, and gently observe the insects living in your backyard or local park. Toddlers love watching ladybugs crawl or ants march in a line. Just bring some wipes and maybe avoid the spiders!

13. Dance in the Rain (Yes, Really!)

A warm summer rainstorm can be pure magic. Put on rainboots or go barefoot, splash in puddles, and laugh like kids yourself. These are the moments they’ll remember.

14. Make a Nature Bracelet

Wrap masking tape (sticky side out) around your toddler’s wrist and let them stick on little petals, leaves, and tiny treasures from your walk. It’s art meets adventure.

15. Sunset Walks & Stargazing

End your day with a stroller walk at dusk, or lay on a blanket in your yard and point out stars. Even if your toddler doesn’t know what a constellation is yet, the calm quiet of the evening is a beautiful way to wind down together.

You don’t need a big budget to make big memories. What your child craves most is time with you — the undistracted, silly, present you. So embrace the mess, follow their curiosity, and lean into the simplicity of summer.

Pack that lunch, grab a blanket, and let the magic of nature and togetherness guide your summer days.

P.S. Don’t forget snacks, a water bottle, and a change of clothes — because you know they’ll end up wet, sandy, or covered in paint. And honestly, that’s half the fun.

I am a first time boy mom, wife, self-published author and wellness connoisseur, trying to live a holistic lifestyle in the very small town of Moonstone, Ontario. I started this blog to share my passion (obsession) for natural, non-toxic living. Throughout this blog you will find inspiration to live your healthiest life, tips to switch to a natural, toxic-free lifestyle, honest and transparent motherhood, birth, breastfeeding, essential oils, help with getting started with Baby Led weaning and all other things “crunchy”. From teaching yoga, to making my own products and sourdough, to trying out veganism, buying an absurd amount of crystals, and trying many alternative medicines, I have dipped my toe in many aspects of the wellness world. I have also completed many courses in Herbalism, meditation, different types of yoga and Ayurveda.

Currently, I am studying to receive my Holistic Nutritionist (specializing in children’s nutrition) diploma. After giving birth to my son, I realized just how important living a natural, healthy lifestyle was. Feeding my son healthy, homemade organic foods is one of my favourite things to do. We began baby led weaning when he was six months old and our food journey has been nothing short of wonderful. This kid will eat practically everything I offer him (except broccoli). My goal is to share our journey and offer some support to new mamas and to assist with making their babies transition to food go smoothly. I also want to help mamas take care of themselves by supporting them with holistic nutrition consulting and meal planning. Mama’s health is just as important as babies, we must set a good example for our children by being the absolute best version of ourselves, they are always watching!

I look forward to meeting you and helping you start your holistic journey.

Hey, I'm Jamie, The founder behind Moonstone Mommy!
