Staying Motivated Through the Long Dreadful Winter

All thing Motherhood & Baby

I’ll be honest — this winter has felt especially heavy for me. More than usual. I’ve felt disconnected, ungrounded, and honestly just worn down. It has been so cold most days that getting outside hasn’t even felt realistic, and when that happens, it’s incredibly easy to lose motivation altogether.

I don’t know about you, but this has been an ultra-rough winter for me and my family. One of those seasons that quietly tests you. Less sunlight, fewer outdoor moments, more days spent bundled up just trying to get through.

What I’ve noticed, though, is that when motivation feels nonexistent, consistency matters more than motivation. Even the smallest daily practices — the ones you do anyway — help guide you back into the right frame of mind. It’s not about doing everything perfectly. It’s about showing up in gentle, sustainable ways until your energy starts to follow.

Winter isn’t something to fight. It’s a season to move differently, to care for ourselves more intentionally, and to create warmth from the inside out. And when we lean into that — even just a little — things begin to feel lighter.

Here are some gentle, holistic ways I’ve been supporting myself through the coldest months, and how you can stay motivated too — without pushing or burning yourself out.

☀️ Prioritize Vitamin D (Your Winter Sunshine)

Vitamin D plays a huge role in mood, immunity, and overall energy — and many of us become deficient during winter. Consider having your levels checked, supplementing if needed, and pairing vitamin D with healthy fats for better absorption. This one simple step can make a noticeable difference in how you feel, especially when sunlight is scarce.

🌿 Surround Yourself With Life

When everything outside feels dormant, bring life indoors. Houseplants, fresh herbs, flowers, and natural textures instantly lift energy and mood. Plants are living reminders that growth still exists — even when the world feels still. Keep your space cozy, calm, and filled with things that bring you a sense of peace and inspiration.

🔴 Use Red Light Therapy for Energy & Mood

Red light therapy has been a beautiful winter support. It helps encourage cellular energy, circulation, and overall vitality — especially helpful when daylight is limited. Even short, consistent sessions can support mood, skin health, and that sluggish winter energy many of us feel.

🌞 Get Sun Whenever Possible (Even Briefly)

If the sun shows up — even for just a few minutes — step outside. Let it touch your face, your eyes (safely), and your skin. These brief moments of natural light help regulate circadian rhythms and gently boost mood. They matter more than we realize.

❄️ Go Outside Every Day (Yes, Even When It’s Cold)

You don’t need long walks or intense outdoor workouts. A few minutes of fresh air truly counts. Step onto your porch, take a short walk, breathe deeply. Exposure to daylight and fresh air helps prevent that closed-in feeling winter can bring and supports both mental and hormonal health.

🏃‍♀️ Move Your Body Gently but Consistently

Movement doesn’t need to be extreme to be effective. Winter is a great season for walking, stretching, yoga, light strength training, or even dancing in your kitchen. The goal is circulation — not perfection. Movement naturally creates warmth, clarity, and motivation.

🥣 Eat to Nourish, Not Restrict

Winter calls for grounding, nourishing foods. Think warm meals, nourishing soups, quality proteins, healthy fats, seasonal vegetables, and mineral-rich broths. Eating well supports stable blood sugar, mood, and energy — all of which directly impact motivation. This is not the season for restriction. It’s a season for nourishment.

🧠 Nourish Your Mind With Positivity

What you consume mentally matters just as much as what you eat. Start your day with gentle affirmations. Speak kindly to yourself. Listen to uplifting podcasts or calming music. Try guided meditations or visualizing warmer days ahead — sunlight, greenery, fresh spring air. These practices help soothe the nervous system and remind us that this season is temporary.

Simple affirmations to try:

This season is temporary.

I am supported, even in stillness.

Light and warmth are returning.

Lean Into the Season Instead of Resisting It

Winter isn’t meant to look like summer. Productivity may be slower — and that’s okay. Motivation during winter often comes from rest, rhythm, and routine, not force. When you honor what your body truly needs, motivation returns naturally, without pressure.

I am a first time boy mom, wife, self-published author and wellness connoisseur, trying to live a holistic lifestyle in the very small town of Moonstone, Ontario. I started this blog to share my passion (obsession) for natural, non-toxic living. Throughout this blog you will find inspiration to live your healthiest life, tips to switch to a natural, toxic-free lifestyle, honest and transparent motherhood, birth, breastfeeding, essential oils, help with getting started with Baby Led weaning and all other things “crunchy”. From teaching yoga, to making my own products and sourdough, to trying out veganism, buying an absurd amount of crystals, and trying many alternative medicines, I have dipped my toe in many aspects of the wellness world. I have also completed many courses in Herbalism, meditation, different types of yoga and Ayurveda.

Currently, I am studying to receive my Holistic Nutritionist (specializing in children’s nutrition) diploma. After giving birth to my son, I realized just how important living a natural, healthy lifestyle was. Feeding my son healthy, homemade organic foods is one of my favourite things to do. We began baby led weaning when he was six months old and our food journey has been nothing short of wonderful. This kid will eat practically everything I offer him (except broccoli). My goal is to share our journey and offer some support to new mamas and to assist with making their babies transition to food go smoothly. I also want to help mamas take care of themselves by supporting them with holistic nutrition consulting and meal planning. Mama’s health is just as important as babies, we must set a good example for our children by being the absolute best version of ourselves, they are always watching!

I look forward to meeting you and helping you start your holistic journey.

Hey, I'm Jamie, The founder behind Moonstone Mommy!

Nice to meet you!
