My Holistic Essentials for a Healthy, Happy Pregnancy

All thing Motherhood & Baby

Pregnancy is such a sacred and transformative season of life. Every pregnancy is different, and every woman’s body responds differently. I feel incredibly grateful that my pregnancies have been relatively easy overall. I personally haven’t struggled with nausea or many of the more difficult symptoms that some women experience. That being said, I have absolutely experienced things like swelling, hip and knee pain, exhaustion, and all of the normal physical changes that come along with growing a tiny human.

Even though my pregnancies have been smooth, I have still been intentional and proactive about supporting my body naturally every single day. I truly believe that preparing your body, nourishing it deeply, reducing toxic load, and supporting your nervous system can make such a huge difference for both mom and baby.

These are some of my absolute pregnancy must-haves — the things I genuinely could not live without during this season.

Magnesium — My Pregnancy Non-Negotiable

If there is one supplement I recommend to almost every pregnant woman, it is magnesium.

Magnesium has been incredibly supportive for me during pregnancy, especially for:

  • Sleep support
  • Hip and knee pain
  • Muscle tension
  • Leg cramps
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Relaxation
  • Stress support
  • Constipation support

Pregnancy places a huge demand on the body, and many women are already deficient in magnesium before becoming pregnant. I notice a major difference in my sleep and body tension when I consistently take it.

I personally love taking magnesium in the evening as part of my wind-down routine.

A High-Quality Prenatal Vitamin

Not all prenatal vitamins are created equal.

One of the biggest things I focus on during pregnancy is ingredient quality. I always look for a prenatal that:

  • Has been third-party tested
  • Uses bioavailable ingredients
  • Avoids fillers, dyes, and artificial additives
  • Contains methylated B vitamins
  • Includes proper folate instead of synthetic folic acid when possible

Your prenatal vitamin acts as nutritional insurance during pregnancy and helps support:

  • Baby’s brain development
  • Nervous system development
  • Maternal energy levels
  • Healthy red blood cell production
  • Overall nutrient stores during pregnancy and postpartum

Growing a baby requires an incredible amount of nutrients, and I truly believe quality matters here.

Prenatal Probiotics

Gut health plays such a huge role in overall wellness, including during pregnancy.

A good prenatal probiotic can help support:

  • Digestion
  • Bloating
  • Immune function
  • Nutrient absorption
  • Healthy bowel movements
  • Vaginal microbiome health
  • Baby’s future microbiome

There is also emerging research connecting maternal gut health to the baby’s immune health later in life, which makes this an important piece of my pregnancy wellness routine.

Omega-3 Fish Oil

Omega-3s are another daily staple for me during pregnancy.

A high-quality fish oil may support:

  • Baby’s brain development
  • Eye development
  • Nervous system development
  • Healthy inflammation levels
  • Mood support
  • Maternal brain health
  • Heart health

I focus on choosing a clean, purified omega-3 that has been tested for contaminants and heavy metals.

Why I Avoid Seed Oils, Fillers, Dyes, and Processed Ingredients During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most important times to reduce your toxic load as much as realistically possible.

I personally avoid:

  • Seed oils
  • Artificial dyes
  • Highly processed foods
  • Synthetic fragrances
  • Excess preservatives
  • Chemical additives
  • Artificial sweeteners when possible

Instead, I focus on simple whole foods and ingredients I can recognize.

While we can’t avoid everything in today’s world, I believe reducing unnecessary exposure matters — especially during pregnancy when baby is rapidly developing.

I choose foods like:

  • Grass-fed meats
  • Organic produce when possible
  • Healthy fats
  • Bone broth
  • Wild fish
  • Pasture-raised eggs
  • Fermented foods
  • Mineral-rich foods

Nourishment during pregnancy does not need to be complicated. Simple whole foods truly go such a long way.

Creating a Low-Toxin Home Environment

Our environment matters just as much as our food.

During pregnancy, I become even more mindful about what I bring into our home. I avoid harsh chemical cleaners and switch to more natural alternatives whenever possible.

I also:

  • Run air purifiers regularly
  • Open windows often
  • Keep plants throughout the home and bedroom
  • Avoid synthetic fragrances
  • Use more natural beauty and household products

Indoor air quality is something many people overlook, but it can have a major impact on overall wellness.

Some of my favourite plants to keep around include:

  • Snake plants
  • Aloe vera
  • Pothos
  • Peace lilies

They not only make the home feel peaceful and grounding, but they can also help support cleaner indoor air.

Hydration — One of the Most Important Pregnancy Habits

Hydration is huge during pregnancy.

I aim to drink a minimum of 3 litres of clean water every single day. I personally prioritize filtered or alkaline water and also drink coconut water regularly.

Coconut water can naturally provide:

  • Electrolytes
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Hydration support

Proper hydration may help support:

  • Amniotic fluid levels
  • Energy
  • Circulation
  • Digestion
  • Swelling
  • Headaches
  • Overall wellbeing

I genuinely notice a huge difference in how I feel when I stay hydrated consistently.

Daily Sunshine and Vitamin D

Getting outside daily has become one of my favourite parts of pregnancy.

Morning sunlight especially can support:

  • Circadian rhythm
  • Mood
  • Sleep quality
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Vitamin D production

I try to get sunshine directly on my skin daily without overdoing it or burning.

Because many Canadians are low in vitamin D, especially during colder months, I also personally use a vitamin D supplement.

Vitamin D may support:

  • Immune health
  • Baby’s bone development
  • Mood
  • Hormone balance
  • Healthy pregnancy outcomes

Sunshine truly feels healing to me during pregnancy.

Greens Powder for Extra Nourishment

Some days are busy, exhausting, or just not perfectly balanced nutritionally — and that’s okay.

A high-quality greens powder can be a simple way to add:

  • Minerals
  • Antioxidants
  • Chlorophyll
  • Trace nutrients
  • Digestive support

I still prioritize whole foods first, but I love having greens powder as an extra layer of nourishment and support.

Gentle Movement Throughout Pregnancy

Movement has helped me tremendously physically and mentally during pregnancy.

I focus on gentle, supportive movement rather than intense workouts.

Some of my favourites include:

  • Walking
  • Gentle yoga
  • Stretching
  • Mobility work
  • Prenatal movement

Benefits of Walking During Pregnancy

Walking is one of the best things you can do during pregnancy.

It may help support:

  • Circulation
  • Energy
  • Mental health
  • Digestion
  • Pelvic mobility
  • Reduced swelling
  • Endurance for labour
  • Healthy blood sugar balance

Walking has also been one of the best things for my mental clarity and emotional wellbeing during pregnancy.

Gentle Yoga and Stretching

Gentle prenatal yoga can be incredibly supportive for:

  • Hip pain
  • Pelvic tension
  • Flexibility
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Relaxation
  • Labour preparation
  • Breathing techniques

Learning how to breathe deeply, relax your body, and stay connected to your nervous system can be so beneficial heading into labour and delivery.

Prioritizing Rest and Slowing Down

One of the biggest lessons pregnancy continues to teach me is the importance of slowing down.

Rest is productive.

Creating life is hard work, even when pregnancies feel “easy.”

I try to listen closely to my body and honour what it needs:

  • More sleep
  • More nourishment
  • More quiet
  • More sunlight
  • More grounding
  • More rest

Pregnancy is not a season to constantly push ourselves.

Pregnancy has made me even more passionate about living a holistic lifestyle. Not from a place of perfection or fear — but from a place of support, nourishment, and intention.

There is no such thing as doing everything perfectly, and every mother must make the choices that feel best for her and her family.

For me, focusing on:

  • Whole foods
  • Hydration
  • Quality supplements
  • Clean products
  • Daily movement
  • Sunshine
  • Nervous system support
  • Fresh air
  • Rest

…has made all the difference.

Growing a baby is one of the most incredible things our bodies can do, and I truly believe moms deserve to feel supported, nourished, and empowered throughout the journey.

I am a first time boy mom, wife, self-published author and wellness connoisseur, trying to live a holistic lifestyle in the very small town of Moonstone, Ontario. I started this blog to share my passion (obsession) for natural, non-toxic living. Throughout this blog you will find inspiration to live your healthiest life, tips to switch to a natural, toxic-free lifestyle, honest and transparent motherhood, birth, breastfeeding, essential oils, help with getting started with Baby Led weaning and all other things “crunchy”. From teaching yoga, to making my own products and sourdough, to trying out veganism, buying an absurd amount of crystals, and trying many alternative medicines, I have dipped my toe in many aspects of the wellness world. I have also completed many courses in Herbalism, meditation, different types of yoga and Ayurveda.

Currently, I am studying to receive my Holistic Nutritionist (specializing in children’s nutrition) diploma. After giving birth to my son, I realized just how important living a natural, healthy lifestyle was. Feeding my son healthy, homemade organic foods is one of my favourite things to do. We began baby led weaning when he was six months old and our food journey has been nothing short of wonderful. This kid will eat practically everything I offer him (except broccoli). My goal is to share our journey and offer some support to new mamas and to assist with making their babies transition to food go smoothly. I also want to help mamas take care of themselves by supporting them with holistic nutrition consulting and meal planning. Mama’s health is just as important as babies, we must set a good example for our children by being the absolute best version of ourselves, they are always watching!

I look forward to meeting you and helping you start your holistic journey.

Hey, I'm Jamie, The founder behind Moonstone Mommy!

Nice to meet you!
